As parents/guardians, we all want to keep our kids safe. Reckless and distracted driving is the number one killer of teens.
Guess what? You, as parents/guardians, are the number one influencer of your child’s driving attitudes and behaviors. They have been watching and listening to everything you do and say behind the wheel since they were forward-facing in a seat.
Remember do as I say and not as I do? Exactly! It doesn’t work. So, what can you do now to help your new driver stay safe behind the wheel?
- Get involved and stay involved—the first year of driving is the most dangerous time for a teen driver.
- You can make the right decision and choose safety over convenience every time--follow the Graduated Driver Licensing laws. Remember over 50% of the teens we lost last year were passengers NOT DRIVERS when being driven by a teen driver—so know who your child gets in a car with BEFORE they get in the car.
- Always buckle up properly every ride—half of the people we lost last year would be alive had they only chosen to buckle up.
- Put the phone and all other electronic devices away—eliminate whatever distracts you. If it takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the wheel, and most importantly your mind off your driving—it’s a distraction.
Make the commitment today to be the driver you want your child to be…it might just save their life.
